So you’ve had a couple of dates, and now you’re ready to make the next move. Initiating a kiss can be tricky, especially if the other person isn’t expecting it or isn’t ready for that move yet. Knowing how to kiss is a great tool to have when dating, however, having the courage to actually do it can be extremely nerve-racking!

Here are a few of our tips on how you can initiate the first kiss.

Be Certain Your Partner Wants it Too

There’s nothing more awkward, uncomfortable and embarrassing than going in for the kiss and being rejected. Ensure your partner/date has clearly given you signs that they are interested in you. This is all about using your best judgment to analyse the situation. If you’ve been on a couple of dates, are getting along really well and flirting back and forth, these are great signs.

Minty Fresh

What’s more embarrassing than being rejected? Unfresh breath! Pop a mint or chew some gum, especially after a garlicky dinner. This is an extremely basic necessity when it comes to first kisses – ensure your breath is nice and fresh. If you’re a smoker, be sure to get rid of the smell if you’re going in for the win.

Don’t Be Forceful

Make sure you’re not being forceful when initiating the kiss. In the movie Hitch, they have a 90/10 approach where you lean in 90% and wait for your date to make that 10% move in to meet your lips. This is a great guide for you to work by! Being forceful can be an awful turn-off and make you seem too keen.

Hand Placement

Having your hands hanging limply by your side can seem awkward. The way you place your hands can make a big difference to your kissing experience. Cupping your date’s face or hands on the neck can boost up the intimacy level (always read the signs, if they are comfortable, go for it), holding hands can be a sweet gesture and lower back can be a nice placement too. Remember not to grope, be gentle and give your date a chance to touch as well.
